An urban guerrilla movement in Chile. It was formed in 1983 as an offshoot of the Partido Comunista de Chile (PC, Communist Party of Chile). Named after an independence hero, the group conducted thousands of bombings and other operations but is best known for Operation Twentieth Century, its plot to assassinate General Augusto Pinochet Ugarte. On 7 September 1986, 25 FPMR commandos directed machine-gun and rocket fire on the general’s motorcade. Five bodyguards were killed, but the general escaped—the rocket that hit his car never exploded. The regime retaliated by arresting hundreds of leftists, including nine of the commandos involved in the attack. In March 1990 FPMR tried to assassinate General Gustavo Leigh Guzmán, who was hit at close range by five 9 mm bullets and lost an eye.
